The Blue Groper is a member of the wrasse family and should not be confused with the Queensland Grapscher (Epinephelus). There is also a similar blue grocer (Achoerodus gouldii) in the waters of South Australia and Western Australia. Yellow lines around the eyes, distinctive fleshy lips and large pencil-shaped teeth. The color is very variable in adults: males of a bright blue, females of a reddish brown, and young of a gray-brown, orange-brown or green. The diet consists of crabs, shrimp, crustaceans and sea urchins. Recreational harvesting of red groupers in Gulf State waters will end on August 30, 2022.
